Help - Question by Ivy
Hello! I am trying to figure out what these are. Found them while hunting for seashells on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. They don't seem to have any kind of opening so I'm not sure if they count as "shells". They are flat on one side and convex on the other, and have a spiral pattern. What are they?

Welp, I couldn't figure out how to add photos, so I'll give more description. They are round, little shells (?), mottled grey and tan in color, with spiraling striations on the flat side. One is pea-sized, the other about twice that size. They were found in the sand at the shoreline. Not much else to say about them.

They might be moon snail shells but broken off as the top spiral half of the shell often breaks off from the lower underside, so it wouldnt show any opening in that case.
If you go to the shell identification page see if they look like the top section of those shown.
