Asked by Anonymous - 729-725 Paypal Security Alert:
I got a text message on my iphone saying paypal security alert and the number was 729-725. Is this some type of scam, it looks very fishy!

It depends, what is the text message asking you?

I would always lean towards scam on anything like this, better to sign on to your account and look at it but I have gotten valid texts from this 729-725 number, which if I remember right it was just to confirm that I signed on to my paypal account earlier in the morning. In this case I was just replying Y or N which is fine, they are just confirming that it really was you that signed on to your account because maybe you havent used it in a while or maybe your IP address has changed or something like that. Its a security confirmation.
However if they are asking you to confirm money transfer or anything like that, do NOT reply. Instead sign on to your account to see that there is nothing out of place or out of the ordinary. I would never trust a reply to text message or email for anything related to money transfer.

729725 is sms short code used by Paypal. That being said others can mimic that number to make it look like them. Always just sign on to your account and look at it if you have concerns (and dont sign on based on a link sent to you, go to your bookmarks and sign on that way separately).

I’m getting texts from PayPal supposedly, giving a security code I requested - one that appears to be a clickable link. Can’t say for sure cuz I’m not clicking on it. Anyway, it’s from 729-75. I did not request a security code and I’m worried someone is trying to hack my paypal

If you really arent sure then just go to your web browser and sign on to your paypal account. Go to your bookmarks to go there though, never click a link you were sent to go there, do it outside of that. If paypal really wants to contact you there would certainly be a message there when you sign on, thats a safe way to verify.

Also received a similar text today, asking if I signed in and to reply with Y or N.
Apparently paypal uses the shortcode 729-75 for texts, but this message was from 729-725 (note the extra "2"). I went into a blank browser tab and logged into paypal to verify (never click links sent through texts if you think it's a scam), but there was no suspicious activity on my account.
If it's from 729-725, it's probably a scam, so just log into your account to double check that everything's in order. The real PayPal would probably address you by name in a security text like that too. Hope this helped!

Note the login process for PayPal.
you type in username and password.
Then, if that is successful / correct, the application texts or emails you a security code.
That means, if you get a security code from the legit 72975, then someone may know your password.
you can call paypal support and lock your account. Definitely change the password.
