Posted by Guest - Dfsort Header Record :
I am trying to use DFSORT to merge several files into one but retain only one of header records.

I have 6 fixed length flat files, each with the same format:
Header-rec
Detail-rec
Detail-rec
.
.
etc.

I want to merge the files but only retain one header rec.

How do I achieve this?

i would use icetool as this gives you alot more flexibility especially when saving duplicates, etc.  Off the top I don't remember all the parms but I know it has alot of options for doing this type of thing.  If you have dfsort then you have icetool also at your shop.

How you would use DFSORT to do this depends on exactly what you're trying to do.

Please show an example of the records in each input file (relevant fields only) and what you expect for output.  Explain the "rules" for getting from input to output.  Give the starting position, length and format of each relevant field.  Give the RECFM and LRECL of the input files.

Can the header records be identified in some way (e.g. HDR in positions 1-3) or can they only be identified as the first record of each file?

Do you really want to MERGE the files (MERGE implies that the records in each file are already in sorted order) or do you just want to append them or what?
